Kindergarten Students are Digital Natives
In Mrs. Lauda's Kindergarten classroom, giant snowmen painted by students line the windows and walls. As students started a recent technology lesson which involved using a drawing program to create snowmen on the school's little red laptops, they already had hands on experience creating a snowman in an alternate medium. Because of this hands on experience many of the students were able to create fairly good representations. They already knew that snowmen are generally made up of three spheres and include arms and a face, maybe a hat and some buttons. This specific technology lesson included skills in listening, numeration and practice with productivity menus and toolbars. Mrs. Ryall, the school's Technology teacher, also explained that the activity developed mousing abilities. Spacial relations work included how many body parts (arms, eyes, etc) and where the parts belong on the snowman. Students also practiced work with colors and changing colors. As the students practiced drawing and utilizing the mouse and other computer functions, hand eye coordination and fine motor skills were also developed. Mrs. Ryall stated, "They are truly Digital Natives".
